Dr subodh Pinki and her father will return from Los Angelis by continental airlines flight CO 0082 and will arrive in New Delhi at 9.20 PM on 26th February. They will stay in Delhi on 27th and will come to Varanasi on 28th February ,by flight.
Whole country and specially cleft patients and their parents and the plastic surgery fraternity is waiting for a real life hero,Dr subodh Kumar Singh who not only transformed the lives of thousands of cleft children and gave them a second chance to live, bringing back smiles on their faces and also bringing them back in the mainstream of society ,but also has made his plastic surgeon's fraternity proud.It has brought the work of plastic surgeons in the right perspective and has become a symbol of dedicated Indian doctors who are determined to help their patients with limited or no resources. A large number of patients and their parents called him and sent him email to congratulate him and to thank him for what he did to change their lives for ever. Many teachers and senior plastic surgeons called him to say that they were proud of him.. Dr subodh Kumar Singh was awarded Smile Train Hero Award in Baltimore in 2007 for doing highest number free cleft surgery in the world with smile train sponsorship. He will be given a hero's welcome in India when he returns in Delhi on 26th evening. He is a real life hero who performs medical miracle of spreading joy happiness and smiles by performing surgeries for thousand of cleft children each year,said Mr. satish Kalra who is regional director south Asia of smile train. His commitment and dedication for the cleft children is something seen to be believed, he said. His passion for work and love for his patients inspires many young surgeons. This real life hero also inspired Emmy nominated director Megan Mylan to make a documentary on his work. The film is all about the work done by his team in G S Memorial Plastic Surgery Hospital in Varanasi and shows how this team efficiently organizes its outreach programs to reach out to the cleft patients ,brings them to their hospital and treats them. Ghutru and pinki were two of the thousands of patients they have treated. The film also shows the passion and tremendous dedication of all hospital staff toward cleft patients,something which attracted megan mylan to come to Varanasi and achieve the highest award for her film.
Dr subodh Kumar Singh recounts how things changed for cleft patients in his hospital after it became a partner of smile train. Till April 2004 he used to come across many cleft patients who had no resources and helped them in all ways possible but a large number of patients could not even afford the cost of medicines. He used to operate about 30-40 cases a months . now with smile train sponsorship his team operates more than 300 patients a month and the number is ever increasing. Smile Train is unique in away that it empowers the local hospitals and doctors to treat cleft patients. It does not essentially brings missionary surgeons from abroad to do camp surgeries. Smile train helps cleft patients in 76 countries of the world through its 1200 plus centers. In India it has 160 centers and 250 smile train surgeon who provide free surgeries to cleft children. main problem is our backlog of 1 million patients in India and 4 million in the developing world. Smile train wishes to treat all these patients in next decade and go out of work .
